Reawakening After Age 50
For many, turning 50 demarks a new period of diminishing life expectations. For others, turning 50 demarks their new beginning.
If you’re over 50 or at least approaching that life stage, you may have experienced it. Popular culture has long referred to this life phase as being “over the hill”.
You become less physically capable.
Your aggressive sense of adventure diminishes.
Life becomes a downward spiral of inactivity and apathy toward physicality.
But the real travesty is that “over the hill” is a mindset. Yes, some aspects of our physical nature change with age. However, the problem with aging isn’t physical degradation, it’s instead a problem of declining expectations brought on by a throwaway society that treats aging as an enigma.
Given a preference, who really wants to grow old. The aging enigma comes from a disconnect between our perceptions created by our youth culture and the reality of getting older. It doesn’t seem to make sense. “Me? Getting older? Won’t happen”. And when it does happen, we become disoriented about our place in society.
How many people over 50 do you see jumping from airplanes in Red Bull commercials or hang gliding in Hero 3 camera promo videos? Do seniors do these things? Yes, absolutely they do, but they’re not supposed to, at least not according to popular culture.
And therein lies the rub: too many people, whether over 50 or not, look to cultural signals for permission to act a certain way. “I just can’t see myself doing that” they think or say, when subliminally they’re lazily falling into what the culture expects from them instead of what truly drives their passion.
No matter what age, humans are physical creatures. We are just better in sync with the universe when engaged in challenging physical activities. Allowing society dictator status over our lifestyles is a sin against nature, a sin against our humanity. And for people over 50, we need our physical natures more than ever, because an active, fit body is a young body, no matter what number you slap on it.
We don’t need more or newer research supporting senior’s physical needs and abilities. The proof exists right here, right now. Even after 50, you can absolutely, positively, beyond the shadow of any doubt, be in the very best physical shape of your life, right now.
The change must come from mindset, from reprogramming ourselves to believe that the very best, most fulfilling physical activities can come after age 50. It’s time to get out of the box, after all, society didn’t put you there, you put yourself there based on what popular culture instructed you to do. You simply must give yourself permission to step out, and you can give yourself that permission anytime, including right now.
The human mind a body holds incredible powers, and beginning your transformation now to a healthy, physical senior will begin showing results almost immediately, even if you’ve never been athletic at any previous point in your life. With your physical re-awakening, an entirely new and wonderful world awaits. Forget what society tells you, it’s up to you to write your own script.
